Chunmei comes from a small village in Shandong, China. She joined Experimental Nanophotonics Group as a Research Associate in 2024. Her research interests lie in the fundamental physics in nanophotonics and their applications in imaging, biomedical, security, energy and other fields. Chunmei earned her doctorate from the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences, Heriot‑Watt University. Her thesis focused on the development of nanoscale optical devices with unusual functionalities that are difficult or impossible to realize with conventional optical components.  She continued to work in the same institute for two years after her PhD study, concentrating on the link loss analysis of satellite-based quantum communications, before moving to the University of Edinburgh for the teaching training programme. Before PhD, Chunmei also worked for five years at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, focusing on the research and development of commercial UV mask aligners and microfabrication.
